Chapter 16

Ffion waited in the street while Hannah went into the shop and picked up a test, a bottle of ginger cordial and some ginger and lemon tea bags. The woman at the counter didn’t bat an eyelid as she served Hannah.

‘There you go.’ She handed the carrier bag to Ffion. ‘I got you some things to help if the nausea gets worse too.’

Ffion peered into the bag as she accepted it. ‘Thanks so much. You’re very kind.’

They crossed the road and walked until they reached a pretty stone cottage with a front garden filled with flowers, white wooden window frames with small panes and a heavy iron knocker on the front door in the shape of a lion.

Ffion unlocked the door and they entered a cool hallway that smelt of beeswax polish and faintly of woodsmoke. The staircase was to the left and the hallway had two doors, one leading into a lounge to the right and the one straight in front led into the kitchen. Ffion led the way and in the kitchen she set down the carrier bag.

‘This is a lovely place,’ Hannah said.

‘I know. Joe renovated it himself. He’s very talented. Shall I put the kettle on?’

‘I’ll do it if you show me where everything is. I think you need to sit down.’

‘I’m fine.’ Ffion gave a wry laugh. ‘I’m not an invalid, I’m just tired and… not quite right. But thank you.’

‘Where’s Odin?’ Hannah asked, realising that the dog hadn’t rushed to greet them as she’d have expected.

‘With Joe. He takes him everywhere he can. He’d take him to school if he could.’ Ffion leant against the worktop. ‘I think I’m going to have to do the test now. It’ll drive me mad if I don’t.’

‘Are you sure?’

Ffion chewed at her lip. ‘No. But if I don’t, I won’t be able to think about anything else all afternoon.’

‘Well, you go and do it and I’ll make the tea. Unless you’d like to be home alone, of course. I don’t want to intrude.’

Ffion grimaced. ‘Please stay. If you don’t mind, that is. I would call my sister, Mari, but she’s taken the children out for the day and I don’t want to worry her.’

‘You and Mari are close, aren’t you?’

‘Very.’ Ffion’s eyes lit up and Hannah thought of the old yearning she’d had to know how it felt to have a sibling. ‘OK. I’m going to do this. The bathroom is upstairs. Tea things are all there next to the kettle.’

‘Great. I’ll be here when you come down.’

Ffion gave a strained smile then left the kitchen and Hannah heard her padding up the stairs. She went about making two mugs of ginger and lemon tea, admiring the homely mugs with farmyard prints and the view of the back garden through the window over the sink. There were flowers in borders and pots, a long rectangle of grass and further along the garden was a wooden archway with climbing roses. Beyond that, she could make out what she suspected were fruit trees.
